How are young leaders forcing world leader to act on climate change?

UN secretary-general Antonio Gutierrez says the world is facing a climate emergency and with political will to respond to the emergency there’s a growing movement of young people fighting to address the inaction. As the world leaders failed to agree upon a solution people are taking matters into their own hands.

Launched on April 18 2018 in Boston, Massachusetts, the SUNRISE MOVEMENT wounded their way across the Midwest all the way to the west coast and down the south and back to DC. It was a life-giving moving movement for the Sunrise movement as they met people in IOWA which is incredibly important state as they were moving into the Presidential elections in the US and were inundated by climate fuelled floods. The pollution that emanates from corporate agriculture has been horrendous for the communities of IOWA. They travelled to places like CHICO and PARADISE CALIFORNIA which was burnt down to rubble that 19000 of 20000 structures no longer exist.

It is pretty striking in itself laying out these examples that the number of people these young activists have managed to get involved to care about the people who are directly affected by the climate change. What particularly is inspiring about the sunrise movement is the wave of young people who are rising to meet the challenge and are not putting up with that as standing up. There are making their voices heard and not only making noises about it but are also putting pressure from within the political systems on the political systems to make sure the democrat politicians come along with them and take up the cause to push for an economy based on renewable energy which is what we need to move towards.

The Sunrise Movement is a great example of that energy and that determination that passion which is really making a difference.

Claire who is a part of another group of young activists called the “Extinction Rebellion” from London addressed that there are not just political or time science problems but also Cultural problems for which these groups of activists come in as a medium of awareness about the Climate change issues. To which she adds that its not only government not giving information to the general public that they deserve but there are political members who have been encountered who definitely don’t really understand the science very well.

These groups of activists showed that they had the public support along with the technological solutions. This proved that the people want the government to take actions on this issue. If the climate emergency narrative is moved to something that focuses in the survival of the species and communities of this world then this is not only resiliency or adaptation but mitigation in first place.
